California has recently passed a bill that would make the use of an ex’s pictures without their consent a crime resulting in up to six months in jail and a 1,000 fine. The law would require that to be charged there must be proof that the images were used to cause the victim “serious emotional distress”. This new phenomenon that has been labeled “Revenge Porn” since most of these images are being sent to pornographic websites in the attempt to embarrass or humiliate ex-girlfriends, boyfriends and spouses. This bill attempts to protect potential targets both emotionally and financially since most “revenge” sites demand victims pay a fee to have content removed.
