Car Chase, Spike Strips, Crashes

Posted on: 03/31/2015

Earlier this month CHP officers spotted a gold Nissan Pathfinder speeding down Highway 80. When the officer attempted to pull over the individual he failed to yield and continued on the interstate with increasing speeds.

Multiple CHP groups joined in the chase as the driver led officers through four different counties. The chase originated in Vacaville around 2 p.m. and continued as the suspect reached the Dublin area.

The Dublin CHP department began to pursue the suspect as he reached the San Ramon area on Highway 680. The CHP’s commercial vehicle enforcement facility was able to place road spikes down in an attempt to stop the driver.

The spike strips were able to puncture the vehicles front tires, but the driver still continued down Highway 680. During the chase the driver sped across the highway at speeds reaching 95 mph.

The flat front tires eventually disintegrated and left the driver with only the metal rims which caused him to lose control and crash into a center divider then a dirt embankment. Before coming to a stop the vehicle overturned, but the suspect was able to walk out of the car on his own.

The suspect was later identified as Ramon Bernal, 24 of Davis. Authorities believe that Bernal was under the influence of a controlled substance when he decided to evade the police.

Once he stepped out if his car he was arrested without resistance and booked into jail. He is facing charges of suspicion of driving under the influence and felony evasion of a peace officer.
